Hobson's conduit is a watercourse, built between 1610 and 1614 to carry fresh water into the city if Cambridge. Authorities from across the city collaborated to bring this clean water into the sewerage filled river that ran through town.
Thomas Hobson bequeathed land and funds to maintain the conduit and gave his name to it.
The monument at the end of Lensfield Road used to sit on the market square, where it formed part of the fountain. It was moved to its present position after a fire in 1856.
