In 1914 Ernest was commissioned as a Lieutenant soon after the outbreak of war. During his time in the army he was able to use his experience as a chemist to great effect, and was seconded to the Anti-gas school. He developed an expertise in chemical warfare and would eventually also advise the US Army in anti-has measures.

After the war he returned to look after this chemists shop.
He passed away in 1955 at the age of 88. He is buried in St Mary and Michael New Churchyard, Trumpington.
